Description

WhisperKOOL Split Wine Cellar Cooling System

WhisperKOOL Blow-Through 4000 OMEGA 110V H.E. Split Wine Cellar Cooling System

The WhisperKOOL Blow-Through 4000 OMEGA 110V H.E. Wine Cellar Cooling System, model S-WKBT-4000-OMEGA, is a pump-down split system engineered for concealed wine cellar cooling installations. Its adaptable evaporator can be integrated into soffits, custom cabinetry, wine walls, attic spaces, adjacent mechanical areas, and other locations where conventional through-the-wall equipment would interfere with the finished cellar design.

The system supports ducted, ductless, and hybrid airflow configurations. This allows the installer to route both supply and return air through ductwork, direct both air paths with deflectors, or combine one duct connection with one airflow deflector. A compatible airflow configuration kit must be selected with the system.

The Blow-Through 4000 evaporator includes configurable airflow, a three-speed fan, an internal condensate pump, dual-side service access, upward-facing refrigerant connection options, and WhisperKOOL's liquid-temperature bottle probe when ordered with the standard KDT controller. The separate OMEGA 110V condenser uses pump-down operation, allowing the evaporator and condenser to operate without a communication cable between them.

This configuration is intended for professionally designed residential or commercial wine cellars where discreet equipment placement, service accessibility, flexible airflow, and stable wine-storage conditions are priorities.

Ideal Applications

The Blow-Through 4000 OMEGA is designed for projects where the cooling equipment must work around architectural, cabinetry, airflow, or visibility constraints.

  • Custom residential wine cellars
  • Glass-enclosed wine rooms
  • Built-in wine walls
  • Custom wine cabinetry and millwork
  • Overhead soffit installations
  • Commercial wine displays
  • Restaurant wine rooms
  • Hospitality and tasting-room projects
  • Cellars requiring concealed supply and return air
  • Projects with limited conventional wall space
  • Installations requiring flexible airflow direction

A project-specific heat-load calculation should be completed before selecting this system. Glass, stone, concrete, exterior exposure, door construction, ceiling height, lighting, occupancy, and insulation quality can substantially increase the actual cooling load.

System Advantages

Key Features and Benefits

Concealed Split-System Design

The evaporator and condenser are installed separately and connected with a field-supplied refrigerant line set. This allows heat, compressor operation, and much of the mechanical noise to be located away from the wine cellar while the evaporator delivers conditioned air where it is needed.

Ducted, Ductless, or Hybrid Airflow

The Blow-Through 4000 can be adapted to a wide range of cellar layouts. Both air paths may be ducted, both may use deflectors, or one side may be ducted while the other uses a deflector. This flexibility helps designers and installers preserve cellar aesthetics while addressing supply-air distribution and return-air placement.

Three-Speed Evaporator Fan

The Blow-Through 4000 provides low, medium, and high fan settings. Higher fan speeds increase airflow and available system capacity, while lower settings may reduce sound where the installation conditions permit. Fully ducted installations must follow the fan-speed guidance in the owner's manual.

Liquid-Temperature Bottle Probe

The standard KDT control configuration uses a probe placed in a water-filled bottle to measure liquid temperature rather than responding only to short-term changes in ambient air. This provides temperature control based more closely on the thermal behavior of stored wine.

Remote KDT Digital Display

The standard controller includes a remote digital display with a 50-foot cable. The controller provides system operation, set-point control, alerts, evaporator monitoring, automatic defrost functions, and temperature-protection features designed specifically for WhisperKOOL wine cellar systems.

Internal Condensate Pump

The evaporator includes an internal condensate pump to help move collected moisture to an approved discharge location. A drain line is still required and must be installed, tested, and routed in accordance with the owner's manual and local requirements.

Dual-Side Service Access

Service access from both sides helps installers and technicians work around confined soffits, cabinetry, and mechanical spaces. The removable-coil design and externally accessible connections are intended to simplify installation and long-term maintenance.

Multiple Refrigerant-Line Routing Options

Multiple knockouts allow the refrigerant piping, wiring, and drainage to be routed according to the selected installation orientation. All unused openings and penetrations must be sealed to prevent air and moisture leakage.

Pump-Down System Operation

The OMEGA pump-down configuration uses a liquid-line solenoid and low-pressure control strategy. It does not require a communication cable between the evaporator and condenser, helping simplify routing where a control cable would be difficult to install.

Flexible Condenser Placement

The Ω4000 condenser can be installed up to 100 feet of line-set distance from the evaporator when the refrigerant piping is selected and installed according to the manufacturer’s requirements. It may be installed indoors with the required OMEGA ducting kit or outdoors with the required protective exterior enclosure.

Required Selection

Choose a Required Airflow Configuration

One airflow configuration kit is required. The kit is not optional because it determines how supply air leaves the evaporator and how return air enters it.

Ducted Airflow Kit — Two Duct Plenums

Select the ducted kit when both the conditioned supply air and cellar return air will be routed through insulated ductwork. This configuration offers the greatest ability to conceal the evaporator and position registers independently of the equipment location.

Best suited for:

  • Fully concealed cooling installations
  • Evaporators located outside the visible cellar area
  • Projects requiring remote supply and return registers
  • Installations in attics, soffits, or adjacent mechanical spaces

Ductless Airflow Kit — Two Airflow Deflectors

Select the ductless kit when both supply and return air will be directed through the included style of rotatable deflectors rather than connected to duct runs. The deflectors can be positioned to support multiple front, back, or downward airflow arrangements.

Best suited for:

  • Soffit installations directly above or next to the cellar
  • Projects where duct runs are unnecessary or impractical
  • Custom cabinetry with adequate open-air pathways
  • Applications requiring configurable direct airflow

Hybrid Airflow Kit — One Duct Plenum and One Deflector

Select the hybrid kit when one air path must be ducted and the opposite air path can be directed with a deflector. Depending on the layout, the supply may be ducted and the return directed, or the return may be ducted and the supply directed.

Best suited for:

  • Projects with limited room for two complete duct runs
  • Installations requiring a remote supply or return location, but not both
  • Custom wine walls and cabinetry
  • Layouts requiring a balance of concealment and direct airflow

The final airflow configuration, register positions, equipment orientation, refrigerant routing, drainage, electrical access, and service clearance should be finalized before the evaporator is mounted or the cellar openings are cut.

System Options

Optional Add-Ons

24V Thermostat Conversion Kit

The 24V conversion kit allows the system to be operated by a compatible customer-supplied 24V thermostat. It is intended for customers who want third-party thermostat or smart-home functionality.

Important: Selecting the 24V thermostat conversion changes the standard control configuration. The system will not be built with the standard WhisperKOOL KDT control or liquid-temperature bottle probe. The customer must source the compatible 24V thermostat. WhisperKOOL does not provide technical support for third-party smart thermostats.

A third-party 24V thermostat measures ambient air temperature rather than liquid temperature. It also may not provide the dedicated evaporator monitoring, wine-temperature alerts, automatic defrost logic, overflow protection, preprogrammed setup, or manufacturer technical support associated with the standard KDT controller.

OMEGA Exterior Enclosure

The OMEGA exterior enclosure is required when the condenser is installed outdoors. It protects the condenser from direct exposure and must be incorporated according to the manufacturer's outdoor installation instructions.

OMEGA Condenser Ducting Kit

The OMEGA ducting kit is required for indoor condenser installations. It allows condenser intake and exhaust air to be routed so that rejected heat does not accumulate around the equipment. The manufacturer's published condenser ducting limit is a combined 25 feet: 12.5 feet for intake and 12.5 feet for exhaust.

Condenser Coil Coating

The optional condenser coil coating may be selected for projects where additional coil protection is desired. Suitability should be confirmed for the actual installation environment when the system is ordered.

Performance Data

Professional Installation

Installation Requirements

Professional installation required: This split cooling system must be installed by a certified or licensed HVAC-R technician. Improper installation or attempted installation by an unqualified person may void the manufacturer’s warranty.

Heat-Load Calculation

Do not select this system from cubic footage alone. A heat-load calculation should account for the cellar dimensions, insulation, vapor barrier, glass area, exterior walls, ceiling exposure, door type, lighting, occupancy, climate, and surrounding ambient temperature.

Cellar Insulation and Vapor Barrier

The wine cellar must be fully insulated and sealed with a continuous vapor barrier. The owner's manual recommends at least R-13 insulation, prefers R-19 for interior cellar walls, and recommends R-30 for ceilings and exterior walls. All wall, ceiling, door, conduit, wiring, and mechanical penetrations must be sealed.

Evaporator Insulation

The supplied exterior insulation blanket must be installed according to the owner's manual before the evaporator is mounted. The evaporator and surrounding ceiling or soffit cavity also require additional fiberglass insulation of R-19 or higher where specified. Improper insulation may cause condensation, corrosion, water damage, capacity loss, and warranty problems.

Evaporator Position

The evaporator should be mounted high in the cellar or soffit so it can collect warmer air near the ceiling and distribute cooled air effectively. The owner's manual specifies mounting within 18 inches of the top of the room where the evaporator serves the cellar directly.

Service Clearance and Structural Support

Maintain at least 12 inches of front service-panel clearance. The framing or equipment platform must support the full operating weight of the evaporator. Do not support the unit with drywall, trim, decorative millwork, or unsupported finish materials.

Electrical Requirements

  • Provide a dedicated 15-amp circuit for the Blow-Through 4000 evaporator.
  • Provide a separate dedicated 110V, 15-amp circuit for the Ω4000 condenser.
  • Do not use a GFI outlet or GFI breaker with the system.
  • Confirm that the supplied voltage matches the rating on each equipment label.
  • A surge protector or power conditioner is recommended.
  • Outdoor condenser installations require an appropriate weatherproof disconnect where required.

Refrigerant Line Set

The refrigerant line set is not included. The HVAC-R installer must provide correctly sized, refrigeration-grade copper tubing and follow the current owner's manual for piping, vertical rise, oil-management bends, pressure testing, evacuation, charging, flare preparation, insulation, and TXV adjustment.

For the Ω4000 condenser, the published line sizes are a 1/4-inch OD liquid line and a 1/2-inch OD suction line for runs under 50 feet. Runs over 50 feet use a 5/8-inch OD suction line. The maximum published line-set distance is 100 feet.

Drain Line

A drain line is required even though the evaporator includes an internal condensate pump. Route the drain to an approved floor drain, utility sink, condensate drain, or another permitted discharge point. The line must not be kinked, pinched, obstructed, or routed in a manner that prevents proper drainage. The installer must test the drain during commissioning.

Condenser Ventilation

Heat rejected by the condenser must be carried away from the equipment. Do not place the condenser in an unventilated closet or confined room where heated discharge air can recirculate into the intake. Inadequate heat rejection can reduce cooling capacity, increase operating pressure, shorten equipment life, and void warranty coverage.

Outdoor Condenser Installation

Outdoor OMEGA installations require the compatible exterior enclosure. The condenser must be level, adequately supported, positioned with required airflow clearance, and located above expected snow or water accumulation where applicable.

Indoor Condenser Installation

Indoor OMEGA installation requires the compatible condenser ducting kit. Both intake and exhaust must be routed according to the manufacturer's ducting limits so heat is not discharged back into the installation space.

Airflow and Duct Design

Evaporator Ducting and Register Guidance

Duct design has a direct effect on airflow, cooling output, operating sound, coil performance, and condensate control. All supply and return ductwork must be properly sized, insulated, supported, sealed, and protected with an exterior vapor barrier.

  • Use 10-inch supply and 10-inch return duct connections for the Blow-Through 4000.
  • Use insulated ductwork to prevent heat gain, condensation, and noise transmission.
  • Keep runs short, smooth, and as straight as practical.
  • Support flexible ductwork to prevent sagging and compression.
  • Do not reduce the duct's internal diameter.
  • Use sweep elbows rather than sharp bends when possible.
  • Every 90-degree bend may reduce airflow by approximately 13 CFM.
  • Do not use more than two 90-degree bends on each duct run.
  • Seal metal seams with approved duct sealant and seal duct joints with foil tape or mastic.
  • Use the high fan setting when required for a fully ducted installation.
  • Keep supply and return registers clear of bottles, cases, racking, trim, and furniture.
  • Position supply and return outlets to prevent cooled supply air from immediately returning to the unit.

Register and Louver Free Area

Decorative registers and louvers must provide sufficient free area. The manufacturer’s register bulletin calls for approximately 50% to 65% open free area across the total register face. Restrictive slats, backing material, mesh, screens, acoustic foam, or decorative modifications can reduce airflow below acceptable levels.

Restricted registers may result in reduced cooling performance, higher airflow noise, excessive static pressure, evaporator coil freezing, condensate problems, and reduced equipment life. Register free area should be verified after paint, stain, sealant, or finish materials have been applied because coatings can narrow the openings.

Linear Register Considerations

Linear registers must be selected by actual open-air area, not only by their exterior dimensions. The manufacturer's guidance specifies that compatible linear registers should be at least 48 inches long and provide adequate open area. Narrow single-slot registers may not provide enough airflow even when their overall length appears sufficient.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the WhisperKOOL Blow-Through 4000 OMEGA?

It is a split wine cellar cooling system consisting of a Blow-Through 4000 evaporator and an Ω4000 110V air-cooled condenser. It is designed for hidden or architecturally integrated installations and supports ducted, ductless, and hybrid airflow.

What does pump-down operation mean?

In the pump-down configuration, the system uses a liquid-line solenoid and low-pressure control to cycle the compressor. This design eliminates the need for a communication cable between the evaporator and condenser.

Does the system include both the evaporator and condenser?

This full-system configuration pairs the Blow-Through 4000 evaporator with the Ω4000 110V condenser. Confirm the final package contents and selected options on the order and packing slip.

Is an airflow kit required?

Yes. Choose one ducted, ductless, or hybrid airflow configuration kit. The kit determines how the evaporator receives return air and delivers conditioned supply air.

What is the difference between the three airflow kits?

The ducted kit includes two duct plenums for fully ducted supply and return air. The ductless kit uses two airflow deflectors. The hybrid kit combines one duct plenum with one deflector.

Can the evaporator be hidden in a soffit or cabinetry?

Yes. The Blow-Through Series is specifically designed for concealed installations in soffits, custom cabinetry, wine walls, attics, and adjacent mechanical spaces, provided the installation meets structural, insulation, drainage, airflow, and service-access requirements.

Can this system cool a glass wine cellar?

It may be suitable for a glass-enclosed cellar, but glass significantly increases heat gain. A professional heat-load calculation is required before selecting the unit. A larger system may be necessary depending on the glass type, surface area, exposure, lighting, and ambient conditions.

What is the cooling capacity?

Capacity changes with fan speed, airflow configuration, and condenser inlet temperature. Published OMEGA 4000 ratings range from 3,441 sensible / 3,715 total BTU/h at the low fan setting in one fully ducted test condition to 4,792 sensible / 5,478 total BTU/h at the high fan setting in one ductless test condition. Use a heat-load calculation rather than a single maximum BTU figure.

How large a wine cellar can it cool?

The documents show different approximate cellar-size guidance depending on airflow configuration, but cubic footage alone is not reliable for final selection. Cellar construction and heat-load conditions must be evaluated before purchase.

Does the system include the refrigerant line set?

No. The line set is field supplied and must be sized, installed, insulated, pressure tested, evacuated, charged, and commissioned by a qualified HVAC-R technician.

How far can the condenser be installed from the evaporator?

The manufacturer publishes a maximum line-set distance of up to 100 feet. Correct line sizing, vertical-rise requirements, oil-management bends, and refrigerant charging procedures must be followed.

What line-set sizes are required?

For the Ω4000, the published liquid line is 1/4-inch OD. The suction line is 1/2-inch OD for runs under 50 feet and 5/8-inch OD for runs over 50 feet. The installer must verify the current manual and equipment labels before installation.

Does the evaporator require a drain?

Yes. The evaporator includes an internal condensate pump, but a drain line must still be connected and routed to an approved discharge location. The drain must be tested during startup.

Can the OMEGA condenser be installed outdoors?

Yes, but the compatible OMEGA exterior enclosure is required for outdoor installation. The condenser must also be level, properly supported, and installed with the required airflow clearances.

Can the OMEGA condenser be installed indoors?

Yes, but the OMEGA condenser ducting kit is required for indoor installation. The intake and exhaust must be ducted so rejected heat does not accumulate or recirculate around the condenser.

What electrical service is required?

This configuration requires a dedicated 15-amp circuit for the evaporator and a separate dedicated 110V, 15-amp non-GFI circuit for the Ω4000 condenser. The installer must confirm the rating labels and local electrical requirements.

Can I use a smart thermostat?

A customer-supplied compatible smart thermostat may be used when the optional 24V thermostat conversion kit is selected. Choosing that conversion removes the standard KDT controller and liquid-temperature bottle probe. WhisperKOOL does not provide technical support for third-party smart thermostats.

Why is the KDT bottle probe useful?

The bottle probe measures liquid temperature, which changes more slowly than cellar air. This helps the controller respond to the temperature behavior of stored wine rather than cycling solely because of brief air-temperature changes.

Does this system require professional installation?

Yes. WhisperKOOL requires split systems to be installed and commissioned by a certified or licensed HVAC-R technician. Professional installation is also required for warranty activation.

What cellar construction is required?

The cellar must be fully insulated, sealed, and protected by a continuous vapor barrier. The door must seal tightly, all penetrations must be sealed, and the room must be constructed to limit moisture and heat infiltration.

How much clearance does the evaporator require?

The owner's manual specifies at least 12 inches of front service-panel clearance. The airflow paths, refrigerant connections, drainage, wiring, and service sides must also remain accessible.

What size ducting is used with the Blow-Through 4000?

The Blow-Through 4000 uses 10-inch supply and 10-inch return duct connections. Ductwork must be insulated, sealed, supported, and designed to stay within the manufacturer's airflow and length requirements.

Can decorative linear registers be used?

Yes, provided they deliver adequate open-air area and comply with the manufacturer's register guidance. Highly restrictive slots, screens, backing, or louvers can reduce performance and cause excessive noise, coil freezing, or condensate problems.

What maintenance is required?

The system should receive annual preventive maintenance that includes coil cleaning, drain and pump inspection, filter and register service, electrical checks, fan inspection, refrigerant-performance verification, controller checks, and bottle-probe maintenance.

How is the warranty activated?

The HVAC-R installer must complete the Split System Warranty Checklist with all required operating readings and installation information. The checklist must then be submitted to and approved by WhisperKOOL.

What warranty is provided?

The system carries a limited two-year split-system warranty for qualifying parts and labor, with up to an additional one-year installation grace period under the manufacturer's approved startup-checklist terms.
