Description
Is the WhisperKOOL Extreme ti the Right Cooling System for Your Wine Cellar?
The WhisperKOOL Extreme ti Series is a self-contained, through-the-wall cooling system designed for properly insulated residential and light commercial wine cellars.
This system is appropriate if:
- Your cellar is fully insulated and sealed with a continuous vapor barrier
- You prefer a self-contained unit (no remote condenser)
- The condenser intake temperature will not exceed 110°F
- You can provide a dedicated electrical circuit
- Your cellar size falls within the rated capacity
This system may not be appropriate if:
- The cellar contains significant glass walls or doors
- Insulation is below recommended levels
- Exhaust air temperature exceeds 110°F
- Ultra-quiet remote condenser placement is required
- The cellar exceeds 2,000 cubic feet
A professional heat load calculation is strongly recommended before final model selection.
Other sizes: WhisperKOOL Extreme 3500 ti for 800 cu.ft. wine cellar, WhisperKOOL Extreme 5000ti for 1250 cu.ft wine cellar & WhisperKOOL Extreme 8000 ti for 2000 cu.ft wine cellar.
W/ KDT PLUS REMOTE CONTROLLER & THERMOSTAT: WhisperKOOL Extreme 3500tiR Self-Contained Cooling Unit for 800 cu.ft., WhisperKOOL Extreme 5000tiR Self-Contained Cooling Unit for 1250 cu.ft & WhisperKOOL Extreme 8000tiR Self-Contained Cooling Unit for 2000 cu.ft wine cellar.
Available Models & Rated Capacity
| Model | Rated Cellar Size* | BTU/h @ 85°F Intake | Dimensions (L x W x H) | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3500ti | Up to 800 cu. ft. | 3,175 BTU/h | 28" x 14.25" x 15.75" | 115 lbs |
| 5000ti | Up to 1,250 cu. ft. | 4,126 BTU/h | 28" x 14.25" x 22.5" | 115 lbs |
| 8000ti | Up to 2,000 cu. ft. | 6,131 BTU/h | 28" x 14.25" x 22.5" | 150 lbs |
*Capacity assumes a fully insulated cellar constructed with proper vapor barrier and minimal glass exposure.
Cellar size alone does not determine performance. Construction materials and ambient conditions significantly affect cooling demand.
How the Extreme ti System Works
The Extreme ti is a self-contained cooling unit. Both the evaporator (cellar side) and condenser (exhaust side) are housed in a single chassis that installs through the wall.
- Cool air is delivered into the cellar from the front.
- Warm air is exhausted from the rear.
- A bottle probe measures liquid temperature rather than air temperature.
Because the condenser remains attached to the unit, no remote installation or refrigeration line set is required.
However, proper cellar construction is critical. Without correct insulation and vapor barrier, no cooling unit will perform to rated capacity.
Key Features Explained
Through-the-Wall Installation
Designed to fit between standard wall studs. Suitable for interior or exterior wall mounting. Exterior installations require proper weather protection and grille coverage.
Variable-Speed Fans
Adjustable fan speeds allow better temperature stabilization and improved air circulation throughout the cellar.
High Ambient Operation
Engineered to maintain 55°F cellar temperature with condenser intake air up to 110°F.
If intake air exceeds 110°F:
- Cooling capacity decreases
- Runtime increases
- Compressor wear may accelerate
Advanced Digital Controller
Front-mounted digital display allows temperature monitoring and adjustment from inside the cellar.
Liquid-Temperature Bottle Probe
Measures the actual liquid temperature of stored wine, reducing short cycling and improving storage consistency.
Ducting Capability
The condensing side can be ducted if airflow requirements are maintained. Improper duct design can reduce cooling efficiency and void performance expectations.
Temperature Differential
Capable of maintaining a 55°F cellar temperature when intake air does not exceed 110°F and construction standards are met.
Installation Requirements
To perform as rated, the cellar should include:
- Minimum R-19 wall insulation
- Recommended R-30 ceiling insulation
- Continuous vapor barrier (warm side of insulation)
- Airtight door assembly
- Dedicated electrical circuit
- Proper drain routing
- Adequate condenser exhaust airflow
Failure to meet these conditions may result in inability to maintain temperature and increased compressor runtime.

Performance Limits & Sizing Guidance
Cellar performance depends on more than cubic footage.
Heat load increases significantly with:
- Glass walls or doors
- Stone or concrete construction
- High ambient temperatures
- Frequent door openings
- Inadequate vapor barrier
Selecting an undersized unit may result in:
- Inability to maintain 55°F
- Excessive compressor runtime
- Increased humidity fluctuation
- Reduced equipment lifespan
Oversizing may cause:
- Short cycling
- Inconsistent humidity control
Professional heat load verification is recommended before selecting a model.

📚 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
If the cellar exceeds rated capacity, the unit may run continuously and fail to maintain 55°F. Compressor strain and premature wear may occur. A heat load calculation should be performed before selecting a model.
Glass significantly increases heat load. Even if cubic footage falls within rated capacity, a glass-heavy cellar often requires a larger unit or split system. Heat load verification is strongly recommended.
Yes. A vapor barrier is required regardless of location. Without one, moisture infiltration can increase cooling demand and cause condensation within wall assemblies.
Yes, provided the garage temperature does not exceed 110°F. If intake air regularly exceeds this threshold, performance will decline and compressor wear may increase.
The Extreme ti series is suitable for light commercial applications within rated capacity and construction standards. Larger or high-traffic commercial environments may require split or commercial-grade systems.
The primary difference is cooling capacity. Each model is rated for increasing cellar sizes. Selection should be based on verified heat load, not cubic footage alone."]
