Description
What Is the WhisperKOOL Platinum Split 8000?
The WhisperKOOL Platinum Split 8000 is a professional split wine cellar cooling system designed for properly constructed cellars up to approximately 1,750 cubic feet. It separates the evaporator (fan coil unit) from the air-cooled condenser, allowing quiet cellar operation and flexible remote installation.
This system requires a fully insulated and sealed wine cellar with a proper vapor barrier. A heat load calculation is recommended before final selection.
Note: Updated Replacement: Copeland 115V to WhisperKool Ducted Platinum Split 8000 OMEGA 110V Wine Cooling Unit and 220V High Efficiency WhisperKOOL Platinum Split 8000 Ducted Cooling SystemÂ
Other Sizes:Â WhisperKOOL Platinum Split 4000 for 1000 cu.ft. wine cellar and WhisperKOOL Platinum Split Twin for 3000 cu.ft. wine cellar.
Is This the Right Cooling System for Your Cellar?
Best For
- Wine cellars up to ~1,750 cu. ft.
- Fully insulated rooms (R-19 walls / R-30 ceiling recommended)
- 6-mil vapor barrier on the warm side
- Projects requiring remote condenser placement
- Custom residential cellars
- Light commercial wine storage
Not Recommended For
- Uninsulated or partially insulated basements
- Wine walls with heavy glass exposure (without load review)
- Spaces without vapor barrier
- Rooms exceeding 9 ft ceilings without load adjustment
- DIY installations without HVAC experience
- Locations where condenser intake air consistently exceeds 110°F
Cooling systems cannot compensate for structural deficiencies.
How the Platinum Split 8000 Works
This is a true split system:
Evaporator (Fan Coil Unit)
Installed remotely and ducted to the cellar.
Air-Cooled Condenser
Installed up to 100 line feet away in a garage, mechanical room, or exterior location.
By separating components, the system:
- Reduces noise inside the cellar
- Improves aesthetic flexibility
- Allows longer refrigerant runs
- Supports ducted airflow (8" supply / 10" return)
Performance & Capacity
- Rated capacity: 3,788 BTU/h
- Rated at 85°F condenser intake air
- Maintains cellar temperature of 55°F
- Operates with condenser air intake up to 110°F
- Designed for ~1,750 cubic feet (in ideal construction conditions)
Actual capacity depends heavily on:
- Insulation quality
- Vapor barrier integrity
- Door sealing
- Glass exposure
- Ceiling height
- Ambient temperature
- Air infiltration
Sizing by cubic footage alone can result in undersizing.
Installation Requirements
This system requires:
Electrical
- 115V / 15-amp dedicated circuit (Evaporator)
- 115V / 20-amp dedicated circuit (Condenser)
Line Set
- Liquid: 1/4"
- Suction:
- 1/2" (under 50 ft)
- 5/8" (over 50 ft)
- Maximum line length: 100 ft
Ducting
- 8" supply
- 10" return
- Maximum 25 duct feet from cellar
Drain
- 1/2â ID clear tubing (not included)
Thermostat
- Advanced digital display
- 50-ft cable
- 50-ft liquid temperature bottle probe
Professional HVAC installation is strongly recommended.
Improper installation is the most common cause of system failure.

Real-World Installation Notes
From field experience:
- Overheated garages reduce compressor lifespan.
- Long duct runs reduce airflow efficiency.
- Glass-heavy builds often require higher capacity.
- Improper vapor barrier causes condensation issues.
- Shared electrical circuits can cause nuisance trips.
This is engineered refrigeration equipment â not a comfort air conditioner.
When You Should Perform a Heat Load Calculation
A formal load calculation is strongly recommended if:
- Your cellar includes more than 20% glass
- It shares exterior walls
- It is located in hot climate zones
- Ceiling height exceeds 9 feet
- The cellar is partially underground
- The door is frequently opened (hospitality use)
Each cellar is unique. Heat load determines correct sizing.
Platinum Split 8000 vs Other Options
| Feature | Platinum Split 8000 | Platinum Split 5000 | Extreme Series |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capacity | ~1,750 cu. ft. | ~1,000â1,500 cu. ft. | Higher heat loads |
| Ductable | Yes | Yes | No |
| Max Condenser Temp | 110°F | 110°F | Designed for hotter climates |
| Best For | Mid-large cellars | Mid-size rooms | High ambient heat |
If your cellar is near maximum capacity or has heavy glass, consider stepping up capacity after load review.
Common Causes of Performance Issues
- Missing vapor barrier
- Inadequate insulation
- Improper suction line sizing
- Condenser installed in overheated space
- Excess duct length
- Electrical sharing
-
Oversized glass exposure
These conditions can lead to:
- Short cycling
- Temperature instability
- Compressor stress
- Reduced lifespan
Warranty
- Two-Year Limited Warranty (Parts & Labor)
Warranty requires proper installation and compliance with manufacturer guidelines.
Bottom Line
The WhisperKOOL Platinum Split 8000 is a strong solution for properly constructed wine cellars around 1,750 cubic feet where quiet operation and remote installation are priorities.
It is not a corrective solution for construction issues.
Proper sizing, insulation, and professional installation determine performance.
If you are unsure whether this system matches your build, we recommend performing a heat load evaluation before purchase.

đ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Yes. This is a split refrigeration system requiring proper line charging, suction sizing, and electrical circuits. HVAC experience is strongly recommended.
No. The Platinum Split 8000 assumes a fully insulated, sealed, and vapor-protected environment. It cannot correct structural deficiencies.
Performance decreases and compressor strain increases. In consistently high ambient temperatures, an upgraded system may be required.
Possibly, but glass significantly increases heat load. A formal load calculation should be completed before purchase.
Up to 100 line feet, provided proper line diameter is used.
Up to 25 duct feet. Longer runs reduce airflow efficiency.
Yes. A minimum 6-mil vapor barrier on the warm side of insulation is recommended for proper humidity control and condensation prevention."]
