Which Wine Guardian System Is Right for Your Cellar?
Choose a Wine Guardian through-the-wall unit for a small or mid-size cellar with a ventilated room next door, a ducted self-contained unit when the equipment must sit outside the cellar, and a split, ceiling mount or water-cooled system when heat has to leave the building or cannot be exhausted at all. Wine Guardian rates every unit in BTU per hour, not cubic feet, so the final size always comes from a heat-load calculation.
This guide explains each Wine Guardian system type, the Sentinel platform and the PRO tier, using only Wine Guardian's own manuals, spec sheets and warranty documents.
In short: through-the-wall units come in Classic, Sentinel and Defender trims, and only Defender is rated for an exterior wall. Ducted units (D025 to D200) install outside the cellar. Split, ceiling mount and wine wall systems put the condenser somewhere else. Sentinel is Wine Guardian's current platform; PRO is a tier on it with 24-volt control and extra service features. The model number is not the capacity, and there is no D040.

Wine Guardian Through-the-Wall Units: Classic, Sentinel and Defender Trims
Wine Guardian describes its through-the-wall units as self-contained systems installed between the studs of the cellar or display wall. Each capacity (01, 02 and 04) comes in three trim packages. Here "Sentinel" is the name of a trim level, which is different from the Sentinel platform explained further down.
- Classic: temperature sensor, classic grilles and a condensate drain tube. It needs an external drain system.
- Sentinel trim: adds a humidity sensor, a humidifier connection, a condensate re-evaporation loop and internal sound insulation. No external drain is required.
- Defender: adds sound attenuation grilles, low ambient protection and electric heat, and is the only trim rated for outdoor use through an exterior wall.
Wine Guardian's through-the-wall brochure says these units reach cellar temperatures from 42°F to 75°F. Its manual lists evaporator-side sound levels at 6 feet from 47.9 dB (TTW01 Defender) to 59.3 dB (TTW04 Classic). Wine Guardian Ducted Self-Contained Units: D025, D050, D088 and D200
Wine Guardian's ducted units house the evaporator, fans, compressor, condenser and controls in one cabinet that installs in a space outside the wine cellar and connects to it with ductwork. That keeps equipment and most of its sound out of the cellar. The minimum duct size grows with the model, from 8 inches on the D025 to 12 inches on the D200.
- The model number is not the capacity. Wine Guardian rates the D025 at 4,520 BTUH total at a 60°F condenser inlet, and the D200 at up to 17,680 BTUH. Neither number matches the name.
- There is no D040. No Wine Guardian document lists a D040. The WG40 is the 50 Hz ducted model, which the manual groups on the same chassis (Chassis A) as the D025, with the same 8 inch and 6 inch duct sizes. The 50 Hz models are rated in watts, not BTUH.

Ducted Split, Ductless Split, Ceiling Mount and Cabinet Systems
Ducted split (DS025 to DS200). The evaporator is ducted to the cellar and the condenser goes elsewhere. Wine Guardian's manual says to duct the condenser discharge outdoors or to a space at least three times larger than the wine cellar. See ducted split cooling systems.
Ductless split (SS018). An evaporator in the cellar with a remote condenser and no ductwork. See ductless split cooling systems.
Ceiling mount and wine wall (CS025, CS050). Wine Guardian's wine wall brochure says the slim evaporator mounts flush with the wine wall's ceiling and can cool wine to serving temperatures down to 45°F. See ceiling mount cooling systems.
Cabinet (CAB018). A unit for wine cabinets with a documented temperature range of 45°F to 65°F.
Wine Guardian Water-Cooled Systems
Wine Guardian says its water-cooled systems suit geothermal, cooling tower and lake water applications. They remove the need to exhaust heat but require a year-round water supply, and they accept inlet water from 45°F to 85°F. Water-cooled versions exist for the ducted line (D025WC to D200WC) and for the PRO tier.

The Sentinel Platform and the PRO Tier Explained
Sentinel is a platform, not a separate product line. Wine Guardian's manuals call the units built after 2020 its current production Sentinel units, and its ducted, split and water-cooled brochures are all Sentinel documents. Wine Guardian says the Sentinel units are made of UL rated composite material with an all-aluminum chassis and coated coils. Browse the Wine Guardian Sentinel platform units.
PRO is a tier inside the Sentinel platform. Wine Guardian's PRO brochure and PRO manual are Sentinel documents, and they cover the PRO ducted models (DP25, DP50, DP88, DP200); PRO ducted split models (SP25 to SP200) are also offered. According to Wine Guardian, PRO adds:

Why Wine Guardian Lists BTU Instead of Cubic Feet
Wine Guardian does not publish a cellar size in cubic feet for any model. It rates capacity in BTU per hour (watts for 50 Hz models), measured at a stated condenser temperature, and its ducted brochure says proper unit size should only be determined by a heat-load calculation. Glass, insulation, lighting and the temperature where the heat is rejected all change the result.

People ask me for the Wine Guardian that cools 1,000 cubic feet. Wine Guardian does not rate it that way, and for good reason: two rooms of the same size can need very different BTU. Pick the system type first, then let the heat load decide the model.

What is the difference between Wine Guardian Sentinel and PRO?

What are the Classic, Sentinel and Defender through-the-wall trims?
