Description
Is the Ceiling Mount 4000 the Right Cooling System for Your Wine Cellar?
The WhisperKOOL Ceiling Mount 4000 (220V High Efficiency) is designed for residential wine cellars up to approximately 1,000 cubic feet that are fully insulated and sealed with a proper vapor barrier.
It is best suited for homeowners who want:
- A flush ceiling-mounted evaporator
- A remote condenser (split system configuration)
- Quiet operation inside the cellar
- Clean wall space without through-wall equipment
Proper insulation, vapor barrier installation, and a heat load calculation are required to ensure performance.
NOTE: A qualified HVAC-R technician is required for the installation of your WhisperKOOL Ceiling Mount 4000 220V. Failure to adhere to this requirement will void the warranty.
Other Sizes: WhisperKOOL Ceiling Mount Mini Split 220V H.E. for 500 cu.ft. wine cellar, WhisperKOOL Ceiling Mount 8000 220V H.E. for 2000 cu.ft. wine cellar, WhisperKOOL Ceiling Mount Twin 9000 220V H.E. for 3000 cu.ft. wine cellar and WhisperKOOL Ceiling Mount Twin 12000 220V H.E. for 3500 cu. ft.
Who This System Is Designed For
The Ceiling Mount 4000 is appropriate when:
- The cellar does not exceed 1,000 cubic feet
- Walls are insulated (recommended minimum R-19)
- Ceiling is insulated (recommended minimum R-30)
- A continuous vapor barrier is installed
- The condenser intake air does not exceed 120°F
- A dedicated 220V circuit is available
- Installation is performed by a qualified HVAC-R technician
When installed correctly, this system can maintain a 55°F cellar temperature for long-term wine storage.
When This System May Not Be the Right Choice
You may require a larger or different cooling system if:
- The cellar exceeds 1,000 cubic feet
- The space includes large glass walls or doors
- Insulation is insufficient or inconsistent
- A vapor barrier is missing
- The environment is commercial or high traffic
- The condenser space regularly exceeds 120°F
- Heat load calculations indicate higher BTU demand
In these cases, the Ceiling Mount 8000 or Twin models may be more appropriate.
Cooling Performance & Capacity
Cooling output varies depending on condenser intake temperature and fan speed.
At 60°F Condenser Air Intake
- Medium: 4,871 / 5,430 BTU/h (Sensible/Total)
- High: 5,324 / 6,087 BTU/h
At 75°F Condenser Air Intake
- Medium: 4,752 / 5,291 BTU/h
- High: 5,198 / 5,914 BTU/h
At 85°F Condenser Air Intake
- Medium: 4,631 / 5,147 BTU/h
- High: 4,945 / 5,351 BTU/h
Performance decreases as condenser air temperature rises. Maintaining a controlled mechanical room environment improves system efficiency and longevity.
Installation Overview
Split System Configuration
- Evaporator installs flush between ceiling joists inside the cellar
- Condenser installs remotely (up to 100 line feet away)
- Reduces mechanical noise inside the cellar
- Preserves wall space and aesthetics
Drain Line
- 1/2" ID clear plastic tubing (not included)
Professional Installation Required
A qualified HVAC-R technician must perform installation. Failure to use professional installation voids the warranty.
Temperature Control & Monitoring
Bottle Probe Technology
The liquid-temperature bottle probe measures actual wine temperature instead of ambient air temperature.
This provides:
- Improved temperature stability
- Reduced short cycling
- More accurate long-term aging conditions
Advanced Digital Display
- Digital touch control
- 50 ft. communication cable
- System protection alarms
- Real-time monitoring
Optional 24V Thermostat Conversion Kit
An optional 24V conversion kit allows connection to a customer-supplied thermostat.
Important considerations:
- The standard WhisperKOOL control and bottle probe are removed when using 24V mode.
- WhisperKOOL does not provide smart thermostats.
- Technical support does not cover third-party thermostat issues.
This option is intended for users integrating cellar cooling into home automation systems.

📚 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
It’s rated for a cellar of about 1,000 cubic feet, assuming the room is well insulated and has a proper vapor barrier.
The unit provides between approximately 4,000 and 6,087 BTU/hour depending on the operating mode and intake air temperature.
The evaporator is mounted at the ceiling, drawing in warm air that naturally accumulates up high, cooling it, and then distributing it evenly throughout the cellar.
It supports a digital controller with a 50-foot cable, and you can optionally use a 24V thermostat.
The evaporator runs on 120 V (requires a dedicated 15‑amp circuit), and the condenser operates on 220 V.
It is capable of maintaining a 55 °F temperature differential, which helps the cellar stay cool even with very warm intake air.
The evaporator unit measures about 35.75″ L × 14.5″ W × 12.75″ H. The condenser is roughly 31.18″ L × 10.75″ W × 21.18″ H."]
