What Does My Wine Cooler Error Code Mean? The Short Answer
Wine cooling unit error codes are specific to the brand and the controller, so the same code can mean different things. On a Breezaire Sentry III, E1 means the unit shut off because it could not cool enough at start-up. On a WhisperKOOL SC unit, E1 points to the bottle probe. On a Wine Guardian remote interface, !1 is a high pressure switch fault.
Identify your brand and controller first, then use the matching table below. Every code listed here comes from the manufacturer's published manuals.
In short: write the code down, find your brand and controller, and read what the manufacturer says the code means. Temperature alarms usually clear once the cellar recovers. Sensor, pressure, condensate and communication faults usually need a part or a technician. If a code returns after you have fixed the obvious cause and reset once, stop and call a licensed HVAC professional.
How Wine Cooling Unit Error Codes Work
A wine cellar cooling unit's controller reads temperature sensors, and on some models pressure, condensate and communication signals. When a reading falls outside its limits, the controller shows a code or alarm symbol.
Some codes are warnings: the unit keeps running while you deal with the cause. Others force a shutdown to protect the compressor or your wine. The manual for your controller tells you which is which.
Why the Same Code Means Different Things
E1 is the clearest example. It appears on all three brands, and it means something different on each.

E1 and related codes by brand
| Brand and controller | What E1 means | Does the unit stop? | First step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breezaire Sentry III | Insufficient cooling detected in the first 45 minutes when the starting temperature was above 75°F | Yes, it shuts off and flashes E1 with the temperature | Manual reset, or unplug for 10 minutes or more |
| WhisperKOOL SC Series | Bottle probe unplugged, badly connected or defective | No; the compressor runs on a timed cycle | Check the bottle probe connections, replace the probe if defective |
| WhisperKOOL Platinum Split and Extreme | Bottle probe not connected or faulty connection | See manual; E1 stays on the screen | Check the bottle probe connection |
| Wine Guardian through-the-wall | Listed with rE as a temperature sensor code | See manual | Check the temperature sensor per the manual |
Breezaire Sentry III Error Codes and Alarms
Breezaire WKL, WKCE and WKSL units use the Sentry III controller. Its owner's manual documents the complete display set below. No other Breezaire code list exists in the manufacturer documentation.
| Display | Meaning | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| E1 (flashing with temperature) | Starting temperature above 75°F and insufficient cooling detected within the first 45 minutes | Unit shuts off. Restart with a manual reset or by unplugging for 10 minutes or more |
| AL (flashing with temperature) | Storage temperature is above the alarm setting (factory setting 62°F) | Unit keeps operating in alarm mode unless the temperature reaches 75°F |
| OH (flashing with temperature) | Storage temperature stayed above 75°F after the first cooling shut-off | Unit shuts off. Restart with a manual reset per the manual; if the same shut-off repeats, contact your Breezaire dealer |
| Er | Faulty sensor | Unit shuts off; the manual describes turning it on manually with the COOLER button and off with the WARMER button |
| LO | Temperature sensor reading below 32°F | Display flashes LO |
| HI | Temperature sensor reading above 99°F | Display flashes HI |
| Flashing temperature | Temperature has fallen below 43°F | Display flashes to draw your attention |
| Fr | Factory defaults restored | Shown after holding WARMER and COOLER together |
| 8.8. | Start of a manual reset | Followed by the software version and the temperature |
Blocked-airflow protection. Sentry III units also shut down when high temperatures are caused by condenser blockage. Breezaire's manuals call for inspecting and cleaning the condenser coil every 3 months, and warn that a blocked coil makes the unit overheat.
The Sentry III procedures for a manual reset and a return to factory defaults are covered step by step in our wine cooler reset instructions. For care that keeps these codes away, see the Breezaire cooling unit maintenance guide.
WhisperKOOL Controller Alarm Codes
WhisperKOOL publishes separate code lists for its SC Series and for its Platinum Split and Extreme Series controllers. On SC units, press and release the set button, then press and release it again while "AL" is displayed to view the alarm. Pressing any button silences the buzzer, but the code stays until the cause is corrected.
SC Series (SC PRO 2000, 3000, 4000, 8000)
| Code | Meaning | Manufacturer fix |
|---|---|---|
| E1 | Bottle probe unplugged, badly connected or defective | Attach or reseat the bottle probe; replace it if defective |
| E2 | Evaporator probe connection fault or defective probe | Check the connection at the back of the controller; replace the probe |
| E3 | Condenser probe connection fault or defective probe | Check the connection at the back of the controller; replace the probe |
| AH1 | Bottle probe reads 4° above the setpoint | Temperature alarm |
| AL1 | Bottle probe reads 4° below the setpoint | Temperature alarm |
| COH | Condenser coil temperature above 145°F | Clean the condenser coil, keep intake air at or below 85°F, check both condenser fans |
| Ad3 | Anti-frost cycle ended on time-out | Check the evaporator coil for ice; unplug and let it thaw; call Customer Service if cycles continue |
| Def | Anti-frost cycle in progress | Normal indication |
Platinum Split and Extreme Series
| Code | Meaning | Manufacturer fix |
|---|---|---|
| E1 | Bottle probe not connected or faulty connection | Check the bottle probe connection |
| E2 | Evaporator probe connection fault or defective probe | Replace the evaporator probe if defective |
| E7 | No communication between keypad and circuit board for 60 seconds | Check the display cable is connected and not damaged |
| E10 | Clock battery is dead | Replace the battery; cooling is not affected |
| EA | Unit is not draining properly | Check the unit is level, the drain line is clear and the condensate pump works |
| AH1 / AL1 | Bottle probe reads above or below the setpoint (4°F on Platinum Split, 8°F on Extreme) | Temperature alarm |
| Ad2 | Anti-frost cycle ended on time-out | Check the evaporator coil for ice |
On Platinum Split units, WhisperKOOL notes that temperature-related alarms are blocked for the first 10 hours after the unit is plugged in, so the system can stabilize.

Wine Guardian Remote Interface and Through-the-Wall Codes
Wine Guardian ducted, split and ceiling units use the Remote Interface Controller. Through-the-wall units use a different interface with their own codes.
Remote Interface Controller alarms
| Display | Meaning | System status |
|---|---|---|
| !1 | High pressure switch fault | Forces the system to shut down; stays on screen until the high pressure switch is reset |
| !2 | Condensate switch fault | Forces the system to shut down; stays until the fault is resolved and reset |
| !3 | Defrost sensor fault (sensor shorted, disconnected or open) | See the manual for your unit |
| !4 | Communication loss between the sensing device and the main control board | System remains operational; stays until communication is re-established |
| Flashing temperature with (!) | High or low temperature alarm | Clears when the temperature returns inside the alarm set points |
| Flashing humidity with (!) | High or low humidity alarm | Clears when humidity returns inside the alarm set points |
High pressure switch. Wine Guardian names restricted condenser airflow, such as a dusty filter or a blocked duct or grille, as the most common reason for a pressure trip. Ducted self-contained units have a manual reset switch. Through-the-wall units reset automatically, but four trips in less than one hour trigger an alarm that needs a manual reset from the Alarms menu and a call to a service technician.
Through-the-wall interface. The through-the-wall manual lists rE and E1 for the temperature sensor, E2 for the defrost sensor and E5 for the humidity sensor, along with pressure and condensate alarm codes. Use the troubleshooting table in that manual for the exact meaning on your unit.

What to Do When an Error Code Appears
- Write the code down along with the cellar temperature and what the unit was doing.
- Identify your controller. Check the brand, model and controller type in your manual.
- Look up the meaning in the tables above and the manual for your unit.
- Fix the obvious cause. Clean the condenser coil, clear the exhaust, reseat a loose probe, clear the drain, close the door.
- Reset once using the method your manual describes.
- Watch for a repeat. If the same code returns, stop resetting and book a technician.
If there is no code and the cellar is simply warm, our checklist for a wine cellar that will not get cold is the better starting point. For sounds and water, see what wine cooling unit noises mean and how to stop a wine cooling unit leak.
When an Error Code Means Calling a Professional
Call a licensed HVAC or refrigeration professional when:
- A pressure, condensate or over-heat shutdown returns after you have cleaned the condenser and cleared the airflow.
- A sensor fault code remains after you have checked the connections.
- The unit runs but the air leaving it is not cold.
- There is a burning smell, electrical buzzing or a tripping breaker.
Wine Cooling Expert, Wine Cellar Authority
The most useful thing you can give a technician is the exact code and the model number. People search for "E1 on a wine cooler" and find an answer written for a different brand. Read the manual for your controller first; it saves a lot of guessing.
How to Prevent Repeat Error Codes
- Keep the condenser clean. Breezaire manuals specify inspection and cleaning every 3 months; WhisperKOOL's SC manual lists quarterly coil vacuuming.
- Keep drains clear. Blocked drains trigger condensate alarms such as Wine Guardian !2 and WhisperKOOL EA.
- Protect sensors and cables. Loose or damaged probe and display cables cause sensor and communication codes.
- Control room heat and humidity. A hot exhaust space or a humid cellar adds load; see how to correct cellar humidity.

If the unit has reached the end of its life, compare current wine cellar cooling units by type and size.
Real questions owners ask when a code appears on the display. Tap any question to expand the answer.
What does E1 mean on a wine cooler?
It depends on the brand. On a Breezaire Sentry III, E1 means the unit shut off because it detected insufficient cooling in the first 45 minutes after starting above 75°F. On WhisperKOOL units, E1 points to the bottle probe. Check the manual for your controller.
What does AL mean on a Breezaire wine cooling unit?
AL flashing with the temperature means the storage temperature is above the alarm setting, which is 62°F from the factory. The unit keeps operating in alarm mode unless the temperature reaches 75°F.
What does OH mean on a Breezaire unit?
OH means the storage temperature stayed above 75°F after the first cooling shut-off, so the unit shut itself off. The manual allows a restart with a manual reset and says to contact your Breezaire dealer if the same shut-off happens again.
What does !1 mean on a Wine Guardian remote interface?
!1 is a high pressure switch fault. It forces the system to shut down and stays on screen until the high pressure switch is reset. Wine Guardian names restricted condenser airflow as the most common cause, so correct that first.
What does COH mean on a WhisperKOOL unit?
On WhisperKOOL SC Series units, COH means the condenser coil temperature is above 145°F. Clean the condenser coil, keep intake air at or below 85°F and make sure both condenser fans are working.
What does EA mean on a WhisperKOOL split system?
On WhisperKOOL Platinum Split and Extreme units, EA means the unit is not draining properly. Check that the unit is level, the drain line is clear and the condensate pump is working.
How do I fix error codes on a wine cooling unit?
Write the code down, look up its meaning in the manual for your controller, fix the obvious cause such as a dirty condenser or loose probe, and reset once. If the same code returns, call a licensed HVAC professional.
Is there a universal list of wine cooler error codes?
No. Breezaire, WhisperKOOL and Wine Guardian each publish their own codes, and codes can differ between controllers and unit types within the same brand. Always use the manual for your model.
Not Sure What Your Code Means?
Send us your brand, model and the code on the display, and our team will point you to the right part or next step.
Codes and meanings are taken from published Breezaire, WhisperKOOL and Wine Guardian manuals and differ by model and controller. Always confirm against the manual for your unit. Electrical, refrigerant and compressor work must be performed by a licensed HVAC professional.
